What does sweet potato pie taste like?

Sweet potato pie is an indulgent and popular southern recipe that is super similar in texture and flavor to a traditional pumpkin pie. Both call for similar ingredients and they have a similar look and taste but sweet potatoes give this pie just a bit more texture and natural sweetness.

If you have never tried sweet potato pie but you enjoy pumpkin pie, I have a feeling you will be pleasantly surprised! I needed to add a sweet potato pie to my collection of pie recipes.

Here we see all the ingredients laid out before we begin the process of learning how to make sweet potato pie.

Here’s what you will need to make this sweet potato pie:

  • 1 pie crust, unbaked to fit a 9 inch pie
  • 2 cups (about 1 ½ pounds) sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • ¾ cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon and ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

The ingredients for sweet potato pie go into a bowl to be mixed!

If you’d like to top your delicious sweet potato pie with spiced whipped cream I’ll be sharing the ingredients and instructions for that below as well! It’s a nice way to finish off this gorgeous pie. It adds not only a lovely look but also an extra boost of flavor.

The finished sweet potato pie recipe looks almost too good to eat!

You can also use a stand mixer to make this whipped cream. I’ve found that it is the easiest way to prepare the whipped cream without having to watch it every step of the way. Your stand mixer can do the work for you!

Once you have stiff peaks be careful not to overmix the spiced whipped cream, you only need a few seconds to combine the cinnamon and nutmeg!

If you are not a fan of whipped cream you can leave it out of the recipe altogether. If you are short on time you can also just use a store bought whipped topping of your choice.

I must admit once I learned how to make homemade whipped cream I was hooked. It is quite easy and the flavor is truly miles above the canned or frozen store bought varieties.

Keep in mind that you can make your whipped topping while the pie is baking and store it in a container in your refrigerator! I like to prepare everything at once so I don’t have to clean up the kitchen twice!

Can I prepare my sweet potato pie in advance?

You can absolutely make your pies in advance but I would hold off on making whipped cream or topping your pies until you are ready to serve them!

After a day or so all of the flavors in the pie really come together to create something nearly magical so don’t be afraid to prepare your pies a day or two in advance.
