Making the crust for the Christmas Sugar Cream Pie Recipe

Christmas is so soon and I’m one happy, festive girl. The presents have been wrapped and the holiday cards in the mailbox. What is not to love about this season? Well, when it’s all over is only party I don’t love, but we won’t think about that right now.

This sugar cream pie is a very classic recipe, and it is the definition of simplicity in a pie dish. I know pie recipes are a staple this time of year. That may be what makes it so beautiful looking and so delicious! I’ve tried for years to recreate this delicious pie and this year; I really believe I nailed it. It is a joy to eat and a seriously impressive dessert. I love anything with holiday sprinkles on top (see my Christmas Sugar Cookie Bites).

When it comes to holiday pies, I love this sweet and creamy sugar cream pie! This pie is rich and sweet, the sprinkles give this dessert a festive look that makes it perfect when making pies for Christmas! This pie couldn’t be any simpler.

You’ll want to make this for every get together possible this year. Yes, it’s that good! You can use all different sprinkles depending on what occasion you’re making this for. Think: Valentine’s Day sprinkles for February or spring-colored sprinkles Easter!

You can really take this pie over the top with a dollop of homemade whipped cream on top before serving. If you aren’t in the mood for making your own whipped topping using heavy whipping cream, you can substitute for some pre-made whipped topping (also known as Cool Whip).

Using pre-made whipped topping will not drastically change the flavor of this wonderful Christmas pie, so do whatever you have time for. Simplicity is my best friend this time of the year.

Tips and Tricks:

  • You can use a premade pie crust if you like to save time.
  • You can also use an oreo or golden oreo crust or even a graham cracker crust would work in this recipe.
  • While you can use any holiday sprinkles I find that the holiday jimmie type sprinkles tend to have the colors run less.
  • Store this pie in the fridge for up to 4 or 5 days.

This is an easy and classic Christmas dessert that will soon become a family heirloom! You can even make this pie in advance. I hope you try it soon and enjoy it as much as we did.

  • 6 tablespoons water
  • 4 tablespoons holiday sprinkles

Pie Filling

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • whipped cream for topping optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • In a large mixing bowl using a wooden spoon mix together the flour, salt, 1 ½ teaspoons sugar and baking powder.
  • Stir in the ⅔ cup melted butter and water.
  • Stir together until everything is combined.
  • Stir in 1 tablespoon of holiday sprinkles.
  • It will still be crumbly, but that is fine.
  • Pat the dough evenly across the bottom of the pie pan and up the sides.
  • Bake the crust for 10-12 minutes until the crust turns just slightly golden.
  • When you remove the crust from the oven lower the oven temperature to 375 degrees.

Pie Filling

  • In a saucepan, add your 1 cup of sugar, cinnamon and ¼ cup cornstarch.
  • Turn the heat to medium and whisk in the milk slowly.
  • Continue whisking and stirring constantly until the mixture comes up to a boil.
  • Let the mixture boil for 2 minutes while still stirring constantly.
  • Remove pan from the heat and whisk in your vanilla and the cubed butter.
  • Set the pan aside to cool slightly.
  • Once the filling has cooled slightly add in 1 ½ tablespoons holiday sprinkles. Just stir once to incorporate these as you don’t want them to melt or the colors to bleed.
  • Pour the filling into the crust and sprinkle the remaining sprinkles on top.
  • Bake for 20 minutes.
  • Remove and let cool.
  • Once the pie is cool place in the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours. Enjoy!
