Chocolate Cream Pie
Homemade chocolate pie is the kind of dessert that dreams are made of. It’s got homemade chocolate pudding from scratch, perfectly fluffy whipped cream, and it is easier to make than you might think!
Hi guys and welcome to “pie month”, AKA Thanksgiving month! When I think of Thanksgiving all I can think about is pies, pies, and more pies. My old fashioned chocolate pie is always a total crowd-pleaser wherever I bring it. It is perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter…you name it. Let me show you how to easily make it!
It is quite similar to my No-Bake Cinnamon French Silk Pie but without the graham cracker crust. This pie is also much more simple as far as ingredients go.
Ingredients needed for homemade chocolate pie:
- 1 prepared pie crust – 9 inch (use your favorite homemade recipe or get a store-bought crust)
- ⅔ cup granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 Egg yolks
- 3 cups Milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 ¾ cups chocolate chips – milk chocolate, semi-sweet or dark
Are these the ingredients for homemade chocolate pudding?
Yes, I’m so glad you caught that! This incredible homemade chocolate pie is made with homemade chocolate pudding! It wouldn’t be an old fashioned chocolate pie with a boxed mix, right? That being said, you can totally feel free to use a boxed mix of chocolate pudding if you’re in a big hurry.
I have found that this preparation is pretty easy and the result is much better than a boxed mix. I’m sure you could use a pudding mix but really this chocolate pie is just better with the homemade chocolate pudding!
Ingredients needed for whipped cream:
- 1 cup Heavy whipping cream
- ½ cup Powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Can I eat this as a pudding recipe without making it into a pie?
You can definitely eat this pudding without making it into a pie. It will be a bit more firm than your typical pudding recipe because it’s meant to be thick enough for slicing!
I won’t lie to you, the temptation is strong when this homemade chocolate pudding comes together…you are going to want to dive right in with a spoon and I would totally not blame you! The chocolate pudding for this pie is so silky and rich. It is incredible and very hard to resist so if you feel the need, dig in and give it a taste!
How to make whipped cream for old fashioned chocolate pie:
This is how you make homemade whipped cream. There is no sense in making a chocolate pie from scratch just to top it with some store-bought whipped cream! This recipe is so creamy and delicious. With just a few steps, it’s also really easy to prepare! You’ll never want to use store-bought whipped cream again!
- Add heavy cream to large mixing and whisk on high until soft peaks form
- Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until stiff peaks form
- Stir in vanilla extract
- Serve pie with whipped cream
When do I add the whipped cream?
I usually wait to add the whipped cream until the homemade chocolate pie has had a chance to fully chill. It’s best not to add the whipped cream until you are ready to serve the pie.
If you are making this old fashioned chocolate pie for a party or event take them separately and add the whipped cream when you are ready to put out the pie, it’ll look and taste best that way!
Can I use this whipped cream recipe for other things?
You must have read my mind! This whipped cream recipe is great for topping things like pie, fruit, and even pancakes! It is great on top of my Double Layer Pumpkin Cheesecake or my Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars. Once you start making your own you will be able to tell the difference. Enjoy, my friends, and happy November!
