Sweet Potato Pie
It is totally worth the effort to learn how to make sweet potato pie! My sweet potato pie recipe is easy and delicious. Anyone can make this tasty pie, the process is easy! Everyone will be impressed with this homemade and indulgent recipe for sweet potato pie.
I devoured my Caramel Apple Pie in about a day and a half so now it’s time for a simple, traditional sweet potato pie recipe.
When you hear sweet potatoes you might automatically think of sweet potato casserole, or shredded sweet potato hash for breakfast. The truth is that sweet potatoes are truly versatile and once you try this sweet potato pie recipe you will see where they really shine!
What does sweet potato pie taste like?
Sweet potato pie is an indulgent and popular southern recipe that is super similar in texture and flavor to a traditional pumpkin pie. Both call for similar ingredients and they have a similar look and taste but sweet potatoes give this pie just a bit more texture and natural sweetness.
If you have never tried sweet potato pie but you enjoy pumpkin pie, I have a feeling you will be pleasantly surprised! I needed to add a sweet potato pie to my collection of pie recipes.
Here’s what you will need to make this sweet potato pie:
- 1 pie crust, unbaked to fit a 9 inch pie
- 2 cups (about 1 ½ pounds) sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted
- ½ cup granulated white sugar
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- ¾ cup evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon and ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
If you’d like to top your delicious sweet potato pie with spiced whipped cream I’ll be sharing the ingredients and instructions for that below as well! It’s a nice way to finish off this gorgeous pie. It adds not only a lovely look but also an extra boost of flavor.
Here’s what you’ll need for the spiced whipped cream:
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 4-5 tablespoons powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
How to make sweet potato pie:
- Roll out pie crust and form into pie plate
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
- In a large bowl, combine cooked and mashed sweet potatoes, butter, sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, spice, vanilla and salt
- Whisk together until completely smooth
- Pour into uncooked pie crust
- Wrap edges of pie with foil to prevent over browning
- Bake for 50-55 minutes or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean
- Cool and serve with spiced whipped cream
Now that we have made our delicious sweet potato pie we can move on to the incredible homemade spiced whipped cream! It’s so good you will be looking for any excuse to add it to your fall desserts and drinks. It goes great on top of a pumpkin spice latte or pumpkin flavored coffee!
How to make homemade spiced whipped cream:
- Pour heavy whipping cream into large mixing bowl
- Beat on medium speed, increasing speed until soft peaks form
- Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until stiff peaks form
- Add cinnamon and nutmeg, beat slightly to combine
You can also use a stand mixer to make this whipped cream. I’ve found that it is the easiest way to prepare the whipped cream without having to watch it every step of the way. Your stand mixer can do the work for you!
Once you have stiff peaks be careful not to overmix the spiced whipped cream, you only need a few seconds to combine the cinnamon and nutmeg!
If you are not a fan of whipped cream you can leave it out of the recipe altogether. If you are short on time you can also just use a store bought whipped topping of your choice.
I must admit once I learned how to make homemade whipped cream I was hooked. It is quite easy and the flavor is truly miles above the canned or frozen store bought varieties.
Keep in mind that you can make your whipped topping while the pie is baking and store it in a container in your refrigerator! I like to prepare everything at once so I don’t have to clean up the kitchen twice!
Can I prepare my sweet potato pie in advance?
You can absolutely make your pies in advance but I would hold off on making whipped cream or topping your pies until you are ready to serve them!
After a day or so all of the flavors in the pie really come together to create something nearly magical so don’t be afraid to prepare your pies a day or two in advance.
If you or your family are more of a pumpkin pie or pumpkin dessert person, try my Double Layer Pumpkin Cheesecake or my Mini Pecan Pumpkin Pies. Are you more in dessert breads? Try this chocolate chip pumpkin bread!
