A Good Read
This is way off topic from the food and drink recipes I normally post, but I really wanted to share with you a good reading recommendation. You see, I’m extremely excited that my uncle’s new book, “Second Suns”,is being released today and I want to shout it from the rooftops! Like many readers, I get my book recommendations from multiple sources: friends, peers, bestseller lists, Amazon, etc…and also from my blog friends! So I thought I’d get in on that and share about this book.
Random House released this new book by my uncle, David Oliver Relin, who is also the co-author of the New York Times best seller and the very inspirational book, “Three Cups of Tea“.
He has also written for many companies in the past, including Parade, Skiing, and National Geographic Adventure. My uncle was a writer of fervent dedication and strong integrity. He had a solid reputation and tended to gravitate toward stories revolved around charity and healing.
“Second Suns” is a story of two very different doctors: Himalayan Cataract Project ophthalmologists Dr. Geoffrey Tabin and Dr. Sanduk Ruit. One doctor is from the United States and the other is from Nepal. These two doctors united together in a common mission to eliminate preventable blindness in the world and dedicated their lives to this mission. They work hard to restore the sight of blind people in very secluded and destitute countries in the Himalayas and Sub-Saharan Africa. My aunt Dawn showed the family a slideshow of pictures from my uncle’s trip to Africa the last time she came to visit us in Rochester and they were so interesting and incredible to see.
Sadly, my uncle David passed away in November 2012, but he saw this book through to the end and I’m so proud of him and his accomplishments. The amount of work he put into such a book is truly admirable. I miss him so much and always will. He was such a great man and I was very proud to be his niece.
This is definitely a great book to read if you enjoy reading very inspiring stories and about people who dedicate their lives to making a difference in the world. I found a few things that the publisher, Random House, wrote about the book and wanted to share them below!
“Second Suns takes us from improvised plywood operating tables in villages without electricity or plumbing to state-of-the-art surgical centers at major American universities where these two driven men are restoring sight—and hope—to patients from around the world….”
“David Relin brings the doctors’ work to vivid life through poignant portraits of patients helped by the surgery, from old men who cannot walk treacherous mountain trails unaided to cataract-stricken children who have not seen their mothers’ faces for years. With the dexterity of a master storyteller, Relin shows the profound emotional and practical impact that these operations have had on patients’ lives.”
You can buy either of his books on Amazon using the links provided above.
