Here’s what you need to make shrimp with garlic sauce:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3-4 cloves garlic, minced (depending on size)
- ½ cup chicken broth
- ½ cup fresh Parmesan Cheese, grated
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Pasta is optional (but highly encouraged by me!)
I’m not a huge garlic fan can I remove it from the recipe?
You can alter the garlic to suit your tastes. I think a small amount goes a long way in this recipe but if you really like (or dislike) garlic you can adjust the amount to your tastes. I always add extra because I’m a garlic freak.
My mom used to tell me I smelled like garlic when I was a kid since I ate it all the time. That sounds super gross, but oh well. You can’t really go wrong with this recipe since the butter, shrimp, and parmesan cheese are going to bring a lot of flavor to the dish as well!
How to cook shrimp properly:
Shrimp are really easy to overcook (I have learned this from my addiction to watching Master Chef). Here are my tips for how to cook shrimp properly so you can make them successfully in any recipe you want!
Cooking time will depend on the size of the shrimp that you use. I always recommend that you buy the largest ones that you can find at a reasonable price and make sure they’re raw! The pre-cooked ones are almost always going to end up being over-done in hot dishes since they’ve already been cooked!
Once the shrimp turn pink and are no longer translucent they are ready. Be careful to watch them when they are cooking. This usually happens within about 2-3 minutes per side and then they’re ready to come off the heat!
You can leave the shells on the shrimp in most recipes and peel them after but for a recipe like this you’ll need to peel them and remove the tails first. Since they are going into a sauce you won’t want to have to do that later! If you can find peeled and deveined shrimp that are raw those are an excellent choice!
How to make garlic butter shrimp:
- The first thing you need to do is melt the butter in a skillet over high heat.
- Next we are going to add in the shrimp, salt, pepper, and garlic. Saute everything for 1-2 minutes until the shrimp start to turn pink!
- After the shrimp start to turn pink add the heavy cream, chicken broth, and the Parmesan cheese to the mixture.
- Mix it all up and simmer the entire mixture for 5-7 minutes, the sauce will start to thicken and that is when you will know that it is ready.
- If you are serving it over pasta you can do that now. I like to garnish with some fresh parsley and lemon wedges for squeezing over the final dish.
- You can store any leftovers in the refrigerator for later use. If you have leftover pasta mix it all together and once it sets together in the refrigerator it’s even better for leftovers!
Is this a garlic butter sauce?
The first part of this recipe is what I’d consider a garlic butter sauce for shrimp. You can serve the shrimp on their own in a garlic butter sauce without adding the heavy cream, chicken broth, and parmesan cheese.
If you just want to cook the shrimp this is a great option. You’ll want to cook the shrimp until they’re done. It’ll take more than 1-2 minutes so make sure you check out the info above on how to cook shrimp properly. It will help you make sure you don’t overdo it, shrimp go from great to rubbery in no time!
How do I serve this creamy shrimp with garlic sauce?
You can serve this sauce over almost any kind of pasta. It is delicious and quick, in about 10 minutes it’s ready to go! If I’m serving it over pasta I make sure that is cooking for a few minutes before I start the shrimp so that everything gets done at the same time!
