How to make the cookies for our cookie bark:
This is how you make the cookie part of our cookie bark. It wouldn’t be much of a “cookie” bark without this part! I will show you how to make the easy and delicious cookies for this fun and festive holiday recipe. Don’t forget you can change out the sprinkles and candy to suit the season if you’d like to make this recipe year round!

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
Line a jelly roll pan (12×17”) with parchment paper leaving a few inches over the edge to lift the cookies out
In a large bowl, combine butter and sugar and beat until light and fluffy
Beat in sour cream, eggs and vanilla extract until well combined
In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt
Gradually add flour mixture, beat until well combined
Press cookie dough into pan evenly
Bake for 15-18 minutes or until edges begin to brown
Cool completely

To begin we have to put our wet ingredients into the stand mixer as we begin the bark for our sugar cookie bark.

How to make conversation heart cookies topping:

Now that we have completed the cookies for our conversation hearts cookie bark we can make the chocolate candy topping. This is the fun part! We’re taking some simple ingredients and turning them into a cute treat that everyone will enjoy.

Place almond bark in a microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave for 1 minute, stir, then continue heating in 30 second intervals, stirring after each heating. Stop when there are a few small pieces of almond bark left, stir until smooth.
Spread evenly over sugar cookies
Immediately add sprinkles and gently press hearts into chocolate
Let set 15-20 minutes, break or cut into small pieces
Store in airtight container

Now the ball of sugar cookie dough is placed on a lined cookie sheet so we can get it ready to be baked.

Here is a great sugar cookie dough idea, rolling the sheet of cookie dough out thin so it can be baked is simple and quick.

Sugar cookie dough ideas and tips:

It’s a good idea to line the pan you will be working with. Use parchment paper to line your pan. It will prevent the bark from sticking it and means you have less clean up work to do!

Before you try to cut or break the bark into chunks, let it cool completely. The harder it is, the easier it will be to break and cut. You can harden the cookie bark in the refrigerator if you’d like!

You can keep the cookie bark stored at room temperature for a few days, about 2-3 without issues. If you prefer the bark a little more firm you can always store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

The cookie sheet is baked and ready to have toppings like icing and sprinkles added!

If you want to make this recipe all year long you can do one of two things…stock up on conversation hearts…or just swap them out for another similarly seasonal candy whenever you get the urge to make a batch!

When you’re feeling more like sugar cookies instead of bark, try my Copycat Frosted Swig Sugar Cookies. The cookies are the same idea and good for any holiday! Even better, I have a Sugar Cookie Popcorn recipe on my blog.
