Everyone else is posting hot dips getting ready for the Super Bowl and I’m over here remembering that dessert dips are easily forgotten about but totally necessary for those football parties.

How is your week going so far?  I’m taking one day at a time after the passing of my dad two weeks ago today.  This is a lot more difficult than anything I’ve ever dealt with before but I feel the love and the prayers surrounding me and my family.  Actually, my dad is one of the main reasons I started this blog.  My dad was a really good cook and loved good food.  He specialized in Italian dishes as most true Italians do, but also really loved grilling.  Around the time that I got married he taught me how to make his famous sauce and meatballs.  I went over his house one day and was determined to learn because at that point in time I had no idea how to cook even one dish.  I was the worst.  I literally ate cereal for dinner on most nights (so embarrassing).  Although my dad claimed “real Italians don’t measure ingredients”,  I demanded that he give me rough estimates on ingredients he was adding and in doing so probably doubled the time it took him to make his meatballs and sauce.  I wrote down every little thing he did because I told him that I need an actual recipe to follow before I can just go improvising!  It still took me several tries to perfect it at home while attempting it on my own, but I think I have it pretty darn close now.  And I am at the “true Italian” status now as I don’t really measure anything anymore.

This has nothing to do with this Milky Way dip, but I just thought I’d tell you how I started cooking in the first place.  My dad always made fun of me (in a loving way, of course) that I couldn’t cook and would laugh at me when I told him I tried making something.  It became an ongoing joke for quite some time but then that joke turned into determination to be as good of a cook as him and make him proud.  I had lunch with him at the end of October and he just started chuckling out of no where.  When I asked him why he was laughing he said it’s just such a funny thought to him that I have a food blog and am all into cooking now.  The “girl who didn’t cook” now has a job based on cooking and baking.  He said “I never thought I’d see the day”.  I think this blog made him really proud and that’s why I will try even harder now and keep it going.

Over the years I would call him with cooking questions and no matter what time of day it was he would always answer his phone and talk me out of potentially disastrous food situations.  I even called him just this past Christmas Eve with a kitchen “emergency” and that would be the last time I was able to do that and use him as my food lifeline.  I asked him a couple of questions on cooking a strip roast that I didn’t think about until the last minute and it was only my third time cooking a large roast.  He gave me his helpful advice, as always, and I knew he felt special whenever I asked his advice regarding food.  He knew that in my mind he was the “expert” and I think it made him feel needed.  So, I credit him for my determination to start cooking which led to this blog down the road.  Thanks, dad!

This candy bar Milky Way dip is the perfect sweet appetizer to feed a crowd at a party using leftover candy. This is great for a quick chocolate fix.

There is not much to say about this dip and even if there was I have probably bored you to tears so I will just leave it at this:  Milky Way fans, chocolate fans, dip fans, people with a sweet tooth – make this Milky Way dip.  It’s a dip made of candy bars…how can that not be amazing?  Remember this Snickers Apple Dip from last year?  Yup, amazing.  Oh, and if you love Milky Ways, you will love these Milky Way Oatmeal Cookies.

This Milky Way dip is the perfect sweet appetizer to feed a crowd! Make this with leftover candy you have laying around as an easy dessert for any party.
Ingredients
  • 12 “fun” size Milky Ways, chopped – 10 for IN the dip and 2 for garnishing the dip (the "fun" size that is a couple of inches long, not the super small ones)
  • ½ cup of unsalted butter
  • 2 cups of light brown sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 (14 oz. can) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Melt butter in 2-quart saucepan; add brown sugar, corn syrup and salt.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture comes to a full boil (10 to 12 minutes).
  3. Stir in sweetened condensed milk and cut up Milky Way bars.
  4. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until Milky Way bars are completely melted (minus the peanuts, of course) and dip thickens up.
  5. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and transfer to a serving bowl.
  6. Serve with sliced apples, graham crackers, pretzels, Ritz crackers or animal crackers.
  7. Take the two leftover Milky Way bars, chop them up, and sprinkle them over the dip before serving.
